Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 21) - The Bureau of Immigration has opened an isolation facility inside the New Bilibid Prison for foreign detainees who have tested positive for COVID-19.

BI said in a statement on Monday that the newly-opened facility inside the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa City is called the BI Ligtas Covid Centre.

“In the past, we used the custodial quarters of our detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa to isolate COVID-positive PDLs,” said BI Warden Facility chief Remiecar Caguiron.

“We have very limited space in our warden facility, and the number of detained aliens remain high,” she added. “That’s why this isolation ward lessens the risk, and is a big help in ensuring the health and safety of everyone in the BIWF.”

The facility can accommodate up to 60 patients and will be installed with CCTV cameras for remote monitoring, BI said. It was put up in partnership with the International Committee of the Rd Cross, the Department of Justice, and the Bureau of Corrections

The bureau added that a ward facility personnel and a medical personnel will be assigned to the facility 24 hours, seven days a week.

The BI said there are 315 aliens now detained at its warden facility for various immigration offenses, with the number ballooning after the bureau's crackdown on large companies that hired illegal aliens earlier this year.

It said that there are currently five foreign detainees who have reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.
