Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 25) — The number of House deputy speakers under the leadership of Speaker Lord Allan Velasco ballooned to a record high of 33 on Thursday.

Before going on a two-month break, the House of Representatives elected Biñan City Rep. Marlyn Alonte as deputy speaker.

Deputy speakers are the second highest ranking officials in the House. They preside over the chamber in the absence of the House Speaker.

Deputy speakers also automatically become ex-officio members of all House committees, giving them voting powers.

Meanwhile, the chamber also elected Quezon City 4th district Rep. Jesus Suntay as deputy majority leader, the post vacated by Alonte.
